Nuclear Power Advantages And Disadvantages Essay Topics

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

This version has a lower word count. Keep in mind, however, that an essay that merely passes the 250 word mark will not likely get you a band of over 7. You should always aim for at least 300 words for the IELTS essay. That being said, a shorter essay can still score high, assuming the question is answered and the English is near flawless.

Ex: One of the greatest and yet the most dangerous of human achievements has been nuclear technology. This technology has the power to both destroy whole cities and save human lives. Overall, I believe the benefits of this technology are somewhat greater than its demerits, as nuclear technology can provide environmental and health benefits as long as its negative use is avoided.

Nuclear technology can generate a lasting source of clean energy. Unlike fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, nuclear energy does not emit toxins that harm the environment and, consequently, people and animals. A properly constructed and maintained reactor is both safe and efficient and, furthermore, has the capacity to generate enough electricity to dramatically reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. However, some might point out the disasters at Chernobyl or Fukushima as reasons to ban this technology. A closer look, though, suggests that these disasters could have been prevented with better oversight. Moreover, the damage caused by these accidents, though horrific, was nevertheless localized. The negative effects of carbon emissions, on the other hand, are a global environmental threat that nuclear energy can help reduce, suggesting it is worth the risk.

Another major advantage of nuclear technology is the medical advances it has generated. Medical equipment, such as the MRI scanner, and treatments such as radiation therapy have saved countless lives. Diagnoses are now more accurate and can be made at earlier stages for diseases like cancer. There is, again, a danger of misusing this technology, but this can be avoided with increased awareness and proper training, thus minimizing the negative aspects of nuclear technology, while the positives are maximized.

To sum up, nuclear technology has the capacity to contribute more positively to humanity. While it can be used to negatively affect the world, the risks involved can be minimized and are worth taking as long as this technology can help the environment and prolong life with its medical advantages.

As with the IELTS, aim higher than the minimum word count. In this case aim for about 400 words. Remember that the essay is marked by a human and a computer. The computer looks at word count, so the higher the better. However, the more you write, the more chances you have to make language mistakes, such as grammar, usage, etc., so be extra careful—Be sure to leave yourself a couple of minutes to do a light edit.

In the following essay, we have used the weaker to stronger approach. Notice that the introduction does not directly state the thesis. Notice as well that the conclusion is not merely a summary of the essay; it actually states the thesis as a conclusion of the analysis presented in the essay. Finally, notice that the opinion expressed does not necessitate the use of “I” or “my” (I think, I believe, In my opinion, etc.).

Ex: Nearing the end of World War II, nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many people claimed that this ended the war and created a lasting peace based on the threat of nuclear weapons. Others mourned the coming end of humanity as a result of this technology. In the nearly seventy years since then, the value of nuclear technology has been debated without a clear consensus as to whether this technology benefits humanity overall or is a threat to its existence. (Notice there is no thesis here, that is, no direct opinion of which side is stronger. We only have the topic and question. Look for the thesis in the concluding paragraph.)

If one looks at the effects of nuclear technology on the progress of the world, one can see some advantages of pursuing further development in this field. Chief among these is the environmental benefit of nuclear energy. Unlike fossil fuels, which emit harmful toxins, nuclear energy is a clean and lasting energy source. Even if critics point out the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima as examples of its dangers, supporters of nuclear energy can simply respond by pointing out that these accidents could have been prevented and, furthermore, that the effects were localized. Using nonrenewable energy sources, on the other hand, presents a global environmental threat that can only be avoided if we have viable alternatives, the most efficient of which is nuclear energy.

Further evidence of nuclear technology’s advantages can be clearly seen in the field of medicine. Diseases, like cancer, can now be diagnosed at an earlier stage using equipment such as an MRI scanner and treated more effectively with radiation therapy. In other words, nuclear technology has the potential to save countless lives, just as it has the power to destroy them. In the long run, the former is a much more likely occurrence.

Lastly, the mere fact that nuclear technology has proliferated all over the world, serves to ensure that no country will rush to use them. M.A.D., or mutually assured destruction, suggests that the use of nuclear weapons by one country will be answered with the same force by the other. America, for example, will not likely strike Russia with these weapons because they know they will receive the same force in return. Thus, having arsenals of nuclear weapons serves more as a peacemaker than a threat.

In the final analysis, nuclear technology can be said to possess more positive features than negative ones. It can protect the environment, prolong human life and alleviate suffering in the process, and maintain world peace. As a result, nuclear technology should be pursued and advanced.

Hi, I'm going to take IELTS after a few weeks and I find writing to be the most difficult especially in task 2. I needed a band 7 and I'm always around 6 to 6.5. My instructor says I tend to have irrelevant sentences and lacks more ideas. But she never pointed how to do it better though, just pointing out my mistakes. So now I am just self studying. I just find it difficult to write everything under time pressure. And thought I just needed more practice. Now, I based my essay structures from what I have seen in other IELTS sites but find it difficult to find an evaluator. I hope someone could help me make my writing skills better. Thanks in advance! :)
