Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble

Dawson Kline, a member of Saint Jo FFA, caught a calf at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble at the January 31st performance.  Dawson will receive a $500 purchase certificate for a show heifer for next year’s show and a chance to win up to $10,000 in scholarships.

Sixteen FFA and 4H members from across the state have the opportunity to catch one of eight calves in the calf scramble at each of the 28 rodeo performances.  Winning scramblers must purchase a heifer, write monthly reports and submit a final essay to the Fort Worth Stock Show Scramble committee.

This is Dawson’s 2nd year to compete and catch a calf at the calf scramble.  He exhibited his scramble show heifer “Jalee”, a Santa Gertrudis, in the Junior Livestock Show in Fort Worth this year and placed 12th out of a class of 38.  Dawson is a sophomore at Saint Jo High School.  He is the son of Brandon and Tiffany Kline.

Kayla Frank, a member of Sunnyvale FFA, caught a calf during Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Calf Scramble, earning a $500 purchase certificate for a show heifer and the chance for up to $12,500 in scholarship awards. Frank’s parents are Joe and Barlo Frank. Frank’s award was sponsored by Michael W. Page.

During 28 rodeo performances the Calf Scramble gives 16 Texas 4-H and FFA members, the opportunity to catch 8 calves, in one of the most thrilling and unpredictable events. Justin Boots and Texas Mutual Insurance Company are long time supporters of the Calf Scramble. Participants who do not catch a calf receive a pair of Justin Boots.

The Stock Show’s Calf Scramble scholarship awards range from $500 to $12,500, to participants who demonstrate dedication and hard work through monthly reports, and a final essay submitted to their sponsors and the Calf Scramble Committee.  Frank will use the purchase certificate to buy a registered beef or dairy heifer she will raise and exhibit at next year’s Stock Show. The Calf Scramble program awarded 70 scholarships totaling in $269,000 in 2017.
